somebodies dance theater is a contemporary dance company that endeavors to expand and wed the arts of dance and theater, and thereby create new models for performance work. From socio-political to intrapersonal complexities, we use dance to share our unique take on the universals and anomalies of the human experience. The company was founded by Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen in Oregon in 2008. Today, somebodies dance theater enjoys a home base in San Diego, CA, where they enlist a new roster of collaborators for each project, including dancers, composers, and visual artists.
Performances:
The company has been presented in venues including the Ailey Citigroup Theater (New York), ODC Theater (San Francisco), Warehouse 2 (Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel), Multiforo at the Instituto de Cultura de Baja California (Tijuana, Mexico), SUSHI Visual and Performance Art (San Diego), the Balboa Park Casa Del Prado Theatre (San Diego), the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre (San Diego), and The Vine: Mojalet’s Place for the Arts (San Diego).
In addition to live solo, duet, and group performance work, somebodies has produced three dance films and has been screened in California, Oregon, and Washington. Their most recent dance film project, “Barcelona Barcelona,” was shot on location in Granada and Barcelona, Spain.
Artistic Directors Gina and Kyle Sorensen were awarded the 2012 San Diego Young Choreographers Prize for their “beautifully crafted dance theater” work, “left Field,” featuring an original score and performance by violinist Kristopher Apple.
