Luminario Ballet of Los Angeles is an award winning repertory ballet and aerial dance company reflecting the vibrancy, diversity, and global relevance of Southern California. The company presents a wide range of work that includes revivals from the Lewitzky Dance Trust, original aerial ballets, and Neo-classical ballets. Featured guest choreographers have included Jamal Story, Alexandre Mango, Debra Brown, and Dwight Rhoden. Luminario Ballet is currently the company in residence at Faisdodo/Sukonick Concert Hall.
Notable choreography in Luminario Ballet’s repertory includes: Judith FLEX-Helle’s LedZAerial, a Cirque du Soleil/Led Zeppelin ballet; Stefan Wenta’s Fantasie on Polish Air, a hommage to Chopin’s 200th birthday; Judith FLEX-Helle’s Winterreise set to Franz Shubert’s song cycle; and Michael Smuin’s Bouquet set to Shostakovich.
The company also performs commissioned, corporate, and commercial dance and aerial works. Past commissions include the LA Philharmonic (“Rodeo” by Aaron Copland and “Estancias” by Alberto Ginestera), The Dana Point Symphony (“Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite”), New Valley Symphony (Tschaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”), and various corporate commissions of original choreographies in contemporary ballet, acro/gymnastics, and aerial dance for various fundraisers and special events.
Luminario Ballet’s repertory has been performed on the SoCal college circuit including: USC, CALARTS, Cal State LA and Cal State Long Beach, UC Irvine, and more. The company has performed at the CADance Laguna Beach Festival, Pasadena Dance Festival, MixMatch Festival Santa Monica, Golden West Dance Invitational, and nationally at the 10th annual Miami Dance Festival in April of 2013.
Luminario Ballet founder, managing and artistic director Judith FLEX Helle was nominated for a 2012 World Dance Award (previously the American Choreography Awards) in Concert/Live Performance.
