Susan Cambigue-Tracey

Susan Cambigue-Tracey has an impressive list of credits as a nationally recognized dance educator, performer, dance writer, and arts education consultant for 43 years. She has a BA in Physical Education/Dance from UCLA and a General Secondary Teaching Credential. Beginning as a high school dance teacher, she has been most influenced in her dance career by dance pioneers Jeri Salkin and Bella Lewitzky. During her long career as an NEA Artist in Residence and dance educator she received two California Arts Council Grants, conducted residencies in 17 states and U.S. territories, twice toured the Dodds schools in Germany and conducted dance movement workshops for teachers in South Africa. She directed and taught at a pre-school, for five years, that stressed all of the arts. She taught courses in “Dance for Very Young Children” and “Dance for Older Children” at Glendale College and has taught “Dance for Children” for 30 years at many universities, including Loyola Marymount where she has been part-time faculty for 12 years.

Before her current position as Director of Curriculum and Teaching Artist Training with the Music Center of Los Angeles County Education Division, she worked for twenty years as a dance specialist, writer, producer and consultant for Performing Tree and as a dance consultant for the Galef Institute. Susan has taught Dance Education courses at California State University at Long Beach, California State University at Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Glendale Colleges, University of Maine in Bangor, Castleton College in Vermont, and Improvisation and Children’s Dance at the Institute for Movement Exploration at Wesleyan University. For the past ten years, she has been part-time dance faculty at Loyola Marymount University. Also, she was a dance artist in residence for nine years at Crossroads, Westland and Echo Horizon schools in Los Angeles.

As founder and director of the Free Flight Improvisational Dance Company, she performed in more than 200 school assemblies and 40 art gallery performances. Ms. Cambigue-Tracey has authored several books and produced a number of curriculum materials, videos, films. Publications for the dance education field, including Artsource®: The Music Center’s Study Guide to the Performing Arts, Learning Through Dance/Movement, The Artist’s Handbook and The Course Guide for Teaching Children’s Dance. She wrote the curricular dance connections for The Galef Institute book series, grades K-6 and has adapted 82 Artsource® units for SRA and Glencoe textbooks, K-12. In addition, she has been the Artistic Director for the Dance Camp of the Redwoods for eight years.

Her work as dance specialist and assistant to the Director for the National IMPACT Project in Glendale Unified Schools during the ’70s led to her work in the national Artists in Schools Dance Component. She is Past-President of the California Dance Educators Association, was a dance artist/educator for The California Arts Project California State University at Northridge, a team member of The California Arts Project and served as a dance artist for the TCAP Leadership Academy. A committed, long-time advocate for Arts Education, she has been very active in Legislative action and is Past Chair (1998-2000) of the California Alliance for Arts Education (CAAE).
