Dulce Capadocia, daughter of Asuncion “Sonia” Capadocia (founder of Silayan Dance Company), became artistic director in 1990. She transformed the company from its grass roots-based folk arts identity into a vibrant multi-ethnic group of trained performing arts professionals.
An acclaimed choreographer of several artist fellowships including the Brody Arts Fund award from the California Community Foundation, the Artist in Community award from the California Arts Council, the distinguished COLA award from the City of LA, the Performing Diaspora Award from Counterpulse, and the Durfee Foundation ARC award, the younger Capadocia is versed in both folk and modern dance forms & continues to develop an original contemporary repertoire of theatrical dance dramas inspired by her native folklore and by deeply personal stories of the human condition.
